THS Community Celebrates Banned Books Week

9/30/2021

On Wednesday, September 29th, the Torrington community stepped outside the box in their celebration of Banned Books Week. Staff and students gathered in the THS Library to discuss the many books that have been banned worldwide, recognizing their underappreciated importance.

Banned Books Week is an international celebration of the right to read. THS has always taken a special interest in this week, and community members meet every year to read from censored books.

Robert Lesser, teacher at THS, put together this presentation with great enthusiasm. He finds it important to teach students not to limit themselves. “There are a lot of high schools that would be uncomfortable with this; there are a lot of high schools that ban books. Not us.”

This year, many English teachers of THS brought sections of banned books to read at the presentation; the list includes Mr. Lesser, Ms. DeMarchi, Ms. Davino, Ms. Galway, Mrs. Roche, and Ms. Young.
